FOUR WINDS is a sustainable building design firm on Mt Desert Island that will work with you and your vision to develop a unique design that are energy efficient, comfortable and fit your lifestyle.  Sustainability is the basis of our approach and reflections the values we hold dear.

We offer building design that combines the esthetic sensibility of an artist with extensive technical understanding. For most of our designs we provide energy performance analysis/consulting and follow through with project management. We prefer to create a team early in a project, with you, engineers, contractors and subcontractors. By engaging the knowledge and experience of all those working on a project, we see better quality work and hope everyone can take pride in achieving the client's established goal.

Living in one of the most beautiful places on earth and being part of a small vibrant community, we are constantly reminded to value our resources, both material and human. Over the years we have found it key to enjoying working with others and being successful.

MEREDITH RANDOLPH

DESIGNER & BUILDING SCIENCE EXPERT

A graduate of Cornell University's College of Architecture Art and Planning and holding a graduate degree from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Meredith is an artist first and started working in Architecture since 2000. Having always been an environmentalist she found her niche with the rapidly evolving world of sustainable building design. As energy performance becomes ever more technical, Meredith seeks to stay informed but find balance through her design sense that comes from intuitive awareness.

An invaluable learning experience for Meredith was designing and building her own house in 2005. Meredith chose to build a straw bale house for the high level of energy performance, unmatched sustainability and the unique feel of space created with natural materials. The house is easy to heat, stays cool in the summer, while being quiet and peaceful. The hands on experience in building has been invaluable to her perspective on design.

Meredith seeks community involvement, including 7 years on the board of the Island Housing Trust, an organization that encourages viable, year-round island communities by facilitating reasonably priced housing opportunities for the workforce on Mount Desert Island. 2 of those years she served as the Board President. Presently she serves on the Town of Mount Desert Planning Board.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
We arise each day to the most welcoming and magical home of our dreams. All who enter stand in awe of this creation. I think the consensus opinion of this place was expressed best by a remarkable lady who looked at Debby and said “My word Debby, your home feels like a great big hug!” Yes indeed It feels like a continuously loving hug. Thank you for this magic.

A Spruce Ledges II visitor:
” You designed an inviting, really exciting, beautifully detailed, captivating home. It is incredible, you are so gifted. It is so much fun to be in and is charming and captivating from exterior.
The design is lyrical during the day - the orientation perfect, the views when walking around lifted my spirit and still cozy and when night falls.
You are an architect and should have the credentials - you are really talented.”

CLIENTS:
We came to Meredith with a concept for our new home.  She listened carefully while making helpful suggestions and was able to mold our concept into a workable plan that fulfilled our vision, met our budgetary requirements, and was energy efficient.  Meredith designed our home with beauty, character, and a high degree of functionality.

Meredith was always timely, diligent, and very attentive to the project.  We placed our confidence in her and it paid off.  We have been in our home for a year and we love it.

My husband and I can highly recommend Meredith Randolph. She designed a home for us on Mount Desert Island that we truly loved. Most importantly, she’s a delight to work with, is a superb listener, and is extremely creative. We would hire her again without a second thought.

Meredith Randolph is a building designer who listens. She is not about building her monument, rather shaping your vision. She works seamlessly with contractors, the best of whom she knows. She lends experience to get the form right, the function effective, and thoughtful attention to sustaining the earth in all elements of water, earth, fire and air.  Meredith crafts lovely spaces.  A joy to be around.

                                                                                    -An appreciative client

Collaborating with Meredith on the design of our house was a wonderful process from start to finish. We purchased a gutted summer cottage and needed to transform it into a permanent residence for our family. We had very specific needs, both practical and aesthetic, and Meredith was able to understand and integrate them into a beautiful design that is a joy to live in.
